Academy of Adaptive Martial Arts

Rising Sun has been home to an adaptive program since it first opened the doors. Our first students were on the autism spectrum and one had Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

In 2016, The Academy of Adaptive Martial Arts became a 501(c)3, non-profit organization, independent of Rising Sun. The Academy offers martial arts training to any student that can benefit from martial arts training. Students with both physical and cognitive disabilities can train in private lessons or group classes. Some classes include a mix of traditional as well as adaptive students, while some classes primarily are for adaptive students.

The highest rank student in this class is blind and has a significant hearing loss. It is not uncommon for him to lead the class in warm-ups or teach in small groups. Students with a wide array of disabilities work together, creating a better understanding and helping each other to achieve their goals.

The Academy also offers classes for children that include small teacher/student ratios and one on one assistants during class. Many students with disabilities cross train in the traditional classes. Scholarships opportunities are available.
