Kathleen Maxey-Scarcello is the owner/instructor at Rising Sun Martial Arts in Pittsford, VT and the Consulting Head Instructor for the Adaptive Martial Arts Association. Rising Sun is primarily an Okinawan based karate system, however Maxey-Scarcello’s training in other styles is evident. She began her martial arts training in Kenpo in the 1970s. She has been training and teaching in the Central Vermont area for the past 23 years.

Maxey-Scarcello was awarded Instructor of the Year in 2012 by the USA/International  Black Belt Hall of Fame. A 4th Degree Black Belt, she has developed one of the first adaptive martial arts programs in Vermont that teaches multiple types of disabilities.

A member of the Adaptive Martial Arts Association, she has served as Head Consulting Instructor and Executive Director until March , 2016 when she set her sights on the development of the Academy of Adaptive Martial Arts. Establishing a new non-profit program that will serve students with disabilities in Rutland County, this progam is unique in that it has established and dedicated classes for students with disabilities as well as mixed adaptive and traditional classes.
